ELL Department Introduction

  • Our English Language and Literature Department is broadly divided into "English Literature" and "English Linguistics" (including English language Education). (For details, see the following specialties and research areas)
  • All courses are conducted either in Korean language and/or English language.
  • Students of many different countries (Korea, Cameroon, China, Kenyan, Malaysian, Philippines, United States of America, Uzbekistan, Vietnam etc.) have studied and are currently studying in the department. Thus, a global environment is formed naturally. Multi-cultural and multi-lingual experiences are offered.
  • Through disciplinary seminars held at the end of the semester, one can get feedback on the areas of interest and ongoing research projects.
  • During the course studies, there will be many opportunities to attend academic conferences and to publish research papers in the academic journals.
  • It is possible to obtain a master's degree in four semesters and a doctoral degree in five semesters.
  • After receiving a master's degree or doctoral degree, there are possibilities for employment in excellent educational and research institutions or companies in Korea and/or abroad.

    Establishment of Master's courses in the English Language and Literature Department

    Establishment of Doctoral courses in the Department of English Language and Literature
  • 1991.02.22.
    The first Master’s student of English Language and Literature Department graduated
  • 1999.02.19.
    The first Doctoral student of English Language and Literature Department graduated
  • Ph.D.: 35 students, M.A.: 51 students, a total of 86 graduate students graduated thus far (~2023.02)

Educational Objectives

  • Professional knowledge development: Based on the knowledge of English linguistics and English literature, students will develop more in-depth academic knowledge in this field of study.
  • Cultivation of professional talents: Current master's and Ph.D. students are encouraged to publish in academic journals on/off campus before submitting their dissertations, thus enhancing their research skills in the field and cultivating talents with professional academic literacy.

Tips for M.A. students

1) During the M.A. Program, if your interest or research direction is English linguistics or English education, two courses in English literature are required. (vice versa)
2) Need to take one compulsory subject course "Dissertation Writing Method"
3) Graduation requirements:
  • Language Examination: The exam focuses on the fluency of using the language related to your major. → You may apply to take the exam from your 3rd semester or later. You may substitute the Language Examination with one of the official language scores listed below by submitting the corresponding transcripts. Korean language (Topik) or English language (IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, New TEPS)
  • Comprehensive Examination: Choose three subjects from the subject courses you have already taken and need to score 70points or more in each. → You may apply to take the exam from your 3rd semester or later.
  • Master's thesis

Tips for Ph.D. students

1) According to your research direction (English Linguistics, English Education or English Literature) choose courses. (at least 36 credits, including ‘Dissertation writing method’, which is compulsory)
2) Graduation requirements
